15-18 August 2013, D-Day Conneaut, Conneaut, OH

AT THE FRONT WILL ATTEND!

Dear reenactor friends, veterans and supporters of D-Day Conneaut,

From all of us at D-Day Ohio, I want to thank you so very much for your hard work and strenuous efforts to make D-Day Conneaut 2012 the most spectacular event we've ever had. Plans are already underway for the 2013 event to be bigger and better! Please mark Friday August 16 and Saturday August 17, 2013 on your calendars for next year's event.

D-Day Ohio (the parent organization of D-Day Conneaut) is also always looking to expand our wealth of experience and skills. If you have a specialized impression or display appropriate to the ETO or home front, we would be delighted if you would consider bringing it to the event and sharing it with our visitors.  Similarly, if you had a great time this year, please consider joining our local or national group and bringing your talents to help amplify the D-Day Conneaut experience. We have a variety of responsibilities throughout the year that can be performed in person in Conneaut or from your computer anywhere in the world. You can join D-Day Ohio through our web site by clicking the "Get Involved" button or email us directly at ddayohio1944@yahoo.com.
If you have additional ideas or suggestions to share with us, please send them to ddayohio1944@yahoo.com. The D-Day Conneaut volunteer staff continually reviews suggestions from reenactors and visitors to the event, and incorporates many of the ideas shared with us.

Over 100 World War II Veterans, many of which participated in D-Day itself, attended the event this year. Because of your efforts they departed knowing that their legacy will be remembered for generations to come.

Finally, we wanted to let you know that the D-Day Ohio gallery now has ALL the new 2012 event photos on our web site. Our team has assembled over 3,000 images for you to view and enjoy. For a small charge, you can purchase professional grade prints or a download of your favorite image. A generous portion of each sale goes to help support this event. The site also included a free public share gallery where you too can contribute pictures you've taken. The D-Day Conneaut event volunteers greatly appreciate everyone's efforts to make the event a visually "clean" reenactment for the public. To visit the gallery, go to http://ddayohio.us/gallery.htm.

Also available for purchase are the D-Day Conneaut challenge coins and our annual commemorative shoulder patch, so visit the PX for yours today at http://ddayohio.us/px-store.htm

Sincerely,

Betsy Bashore, CEO, D-Day Ohio Inc.

Dear fellow living historians and D-Day Conneaut supporters:

We are very excited about the 2013 D-Day Conneaut event. If you haven't already, please mark your calendar for Friday August 16 and Saturday August 17, 2013. Reenactor registration will open on May 8 via our web site (ddayohio.us). Online registration is free -- avoid the "walk-on" fee and help us better plan for space constraints by completing your online registration before August 8.

This year we will continue our all day program on Friday but will be adding some experiential opportunities for reenactors. Allied soldiers can expect additional pre-invasion training and in-camp living history opportunities, as well as practice landings on Friday. For Allied military women, we plan to feature hands on classes on jobs filled by WACs (e.g. meteorology, aerial photography interpretation), in addition to the classes open to all women reenactors attending the event.  Axis soldiers can also look forward to in-camp training and scenarios.  Saturday will be busy as usual but we look forward to additional in-camp activities during the day as well. A full schedule will be available in early June.

D-Day Conneaut will include Thursday, Friday and Saturday night activities as it has in prior years. Thursday we plan to host an outdoor movie again and Friday will feature a reprise of the biergarten. Saturday will include the reenactor, volunteer and veteran spaghetti dinner, the USO, as well as the opening of a canteen venue to provide a place to socialize. These events are planned for indoors as we usually experience a Saturday night rainstorm.

The Allied and Axis messes will be back in 2013 to provide WWII appropriate fare to reenactors on Friday and Saturday. Bring your mess tins! We also anticipate a wide variety of vendors providing WWII original and reproduction items.  This year we will list registered vendors approximately a month before the event.  Last, we will be using the same parking constraints as last year. Friday during programming, there is restricted access to the camps via modern vehicles and for those in the Axis camp, there will be a shuttle for equipment as in 2012. Also, because of volume, reenactor parking will be at the elementary school about a block from the park so please plan accordingly.

Please let us know if you have additional questions leading up to the event. We'll be in touch again soon.

See you on the beach!

This parking will be at Lakeshore Primary, approximately 2 blocks from the site.  However, to reduce the inconvenience of using offsite parking, breakfast and lunch will be provided both days of the event and evening transportation will be available Friday and Saturday nights.

We are very excited about the 2013 event and hope to see you on the beach! Look for additional updates in June and July....

Sincerely,

Betsy Bashore, CEO
D-Day Ohio

July 7, 2013

Hi Everyone,

The 14th annual D-Day Conneaut event is less than 6 weeks away—Friday August 16 and Saturday August 17. With a month remaining to preregister, registration is at 670, about 30% above last year at this time.  REGISTRATION CLOSES AUGUST 6.  All WWII ETO and home front impressions are welcome. Registered participants MUST check in on site to obtain inspection forms/meal passes.

Planned activities can be found on the attached schedules.  This year, the Thursday movie in the park will be "Casablanca". Registered participants may ride the landing craft throughout Thursday and Friday.  A soccer match will be held at 1500 on Friday—additional information is attached. Please respond to the email addresses in the attachment if you are interested in playing. The American Legion will again conduct its contest for unit camp impressions on Saturday and awards will be presented at the USO show on Saturday night.

Some special updates:
---------------------------------------------------
From Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force:

The Assault Training Center this year will include a variety of activities designed to prepare soldiers for the Normandy Invasion. The 29th DIV will be leading sessions on boat team deployment from the landing craft; the 1st DIV will be leading sessions on neutralizing beach obstacles; the Commonwealth will be training soldiers on the .55 antitank rifle, and the Rangers will be leading sessions on rope climbing.  All Allied soldiers are invited to participate in the ATC from 1400-1500 on Friday.

Allied Command Staff

---------------------------------------------------------
From the Desk of the German High Command:

The field kitchen will be serving dinner on Friday and breakfast and lunch on Saturday, so don't forget to bring your mess tin and utensils. There will be a focus on authenticity this year and Axis staff and unit commanders will be conducting inspections to better police impressions and authenticity. Accurate impressions are required to participate in the Axis camp and public battles.
As I have stated in past years, this is a living history event and I ask ALL of you to be in "character" during public hours. Conduct yourselves as a German soldier would, speak as much German as possible (only German during battles), NO cameras during battles. Follow orders and have FUN.

Dan Merzke

--------------------------------------------------------------

Registration Details (the fine print): Pre-registration free to all reenactors to August 6. Registration/check-in is accepted on site for a $10.00 walk on fee. Military participants must be 16 with parent/guardian or 18 to participate as combatant. Register on our web site www.ddayohio.us. If you are bringing a display only or a vehicle for the vehicle show, please also register so we may reserve you a space.

Shower facilities: Lake water shower on site. Standard showers at Loves at RT7 and I90(10 minutes from site).

Check in/camp set up: Camp set up officially starts Thursday August 18 0900 to 2200. Reenactors may arrive on site as early as Tuesday or Wednesday with preclearance -- please contact ddayohio1944@yahoo.com directly for additional information on early arrivals.  Friday check in and camps open for set up from 0900-2200. Saturday check in is 0800 to 1000 and the site is closed to vehicles from 0830 to 1700.

Parking: Because the event has grown considerably in the past year, we will be transitioning to off-site parking for reenactors, volunteers and vendors. This parking will be at Lakeshore Primary, approximately 2 blocks from the site.

A couple of final notes:

If you are arriving on Wednesday, we are seeking volunteers to attend a program at a retirement community in Conneaut. The Villas has several residents who are veterans of WWII and Korea. As their residents are unable to attend the event, they have invited a small party to provide demonstrations at their location.  Please let us know if you are able to assist.

Last, D-Day Conneaut was granted funds to produce an educational video about the event for the 70th anniversary of the Normandy Landings (to be available next year). We ask all participants to ensure your camp is policed for anachronisms and to strive for a high degree of authenticity. We may also ask you to participate in an interview, film clip (of an activity already planned) or to talk about your particular impression. Not only will the cameras be rolling this year, but the still and video images will be widely distributed!

We are very excited about the 2013 event and hope to see you on the beach! Final schedules, maps, and event guidelines will accompany the August email to reenactors.

Sincerely,

Betsy Bashore, CEO
D-Day Ohio, Inc.
